Gen 11:4 says the people wanted to make a name for themselves lest they be scattered. It seems to me that this whole "look at me" mentality that is prevalent today could be seen as people wanting to make a name for themselves. Any time you try to draw the focus to yourself instead of to God, you are doing the same as those who built Babel. Also, God had told man to be fruitful and fill the earth. The people of Babel were disobedient by trying to gather in one place. So to me it seems that just plain old disobedience to God would be a modern example (actually past, present, and future example).
The Internet is the most obvious one to me. It links every one together and when you need a answer to a question where do you go? The Internet. When I write this it is automatically capitalized. We have made it way to important and given it way too much power in our lives! God 1st, and all things will be added unto you.
Eugenics. Genetically Modified. Mixing dna of two or more different species to create a hybrid, beast. Not sci-fi anymore. They are playing God. Its being done to plants and animals - our food/medicine supply is being polluted. Very dangerous. And this is what they are doing in the open. Just learn about GMO and Monsanto, if you still care about the truth-2 Thessalonians 2:10-12.The devil can't create like God so he makes sickly evil counterfeits. GMO is just one example. God wants me to eat organic. Farm your lawn. This is a sick world with too much evil from sin and ignoring God if you understand that and want to learn more about GMO here are two Youtube documentaries I found very informative. I agree with the ones above, and add: Smart Phones Labeling people with a "number" ID (e.g., Social Security No.) Tapping into your phone conversations, emails, bank records, etc. Evolution being taught in schools today Gov't trying to control more of our lives by taking away privacy and not respecting our rights (as given by God and the Bill of Rights) Satellites watching over all you are doing Drones spying in on people
Unfortunately, much of our "religion" today is trying to reach or please God by our own works. Galatians deals with being saved by faith and then trying to live by works. The sad thing is many of our fundamental churches make all kinds of rules such as don't smoke, don't drink, our clothing should be of a particular style, etc. We are saved by faith with God's grace. That's the way we need to live, is by faith, trusting in His Grace.
I Quote N.T. Wright: The real problem with the myth of progress is, as I just hinted, that it cannot deal with evil. And when I say “deal with,” I don’t just mean intellectually, though that is true as well; I mean in practice. It can’t develop a strategy that actually addresses the severe problems of evil in the world. This is why all the evolutionary optimism of the last two hundred years remains helpless before world war, drug crime, Auschwitz, apartheid, child pornography, and the other interesting sidelines that evolution has thrown up for our entertainment in the twentieth century. We can’t explain them, given the myth of progress, and neither can we eradicate them. Marx’s own agenda, not to explain the world but to change it, remains unfulfilled. Of course, the twentieth century provided a quite full answer to the myth of progress, as many people (such as Karl Barth) saw during the First World War, but it’s remarkable how many others have continued to believe and propagate it nonetheless. Teilhard himself was a stretcher bearer during the Great War, and the experience was influential not in leading him away from evolution but in his attempt to factor human suffering into his equation. Part of the problem in our contemporary debates about asylum seekers or about the Middle East is that our politicians still want to present us with the dream of progress, the steady forward advance of the golden dream of freedom; and when the tide of human misery washes up on our beaches or when people in cultures very different from our own seem not to want the kind of freedom we had in mind, it is not just socially but ideologically untidy and inconvenient. The direct answer is, "no". All the people of the earth were united by a common language, and God said this: "Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do". (Gen 11:6 KJV) God did an amazing job of dividing mankind up at the tower of Babel by confusing our languages. Now, some people know some things, but others don't--think of how China keeps wanting to figure out Western technological secrets! The great peoples of Africa and much of Asia lack most of the technological knowledge of Europe and the US. You have to really work to learn another language--and even then, you usually don't really know it as well as the native speakers. Their knowledge is locked up in their language, for the most part. We think we are pretty smart: but mankind is moving downward, not upward. Think about it: before the Flood of Noah, people lived to 900 years old. Imagine how much knowledge and wisdom they accumulated! The pyramids and other ancient artifacts baffle us as to how they were accomplished! Sure, we can send a rocket to the moon. But only a few nations do that, and they really do not know everything the other nations know. Often, key technology is a carefully guarded secret. So, no. What we have achieved is not on a par with the Tower of Babel. God has not reacted to our space programs, our big ships, our fast cars, or our tall buildings, like He did with the tower of Babel.
