Your question: What does it mean that hell is eternal separation from God?

I believe some people sometimes get confused about the eternal separation from God and when it actually occurs.

Let me explain the difference between Hell and the Lake of Fire.

We observe two distinct groups in the realm of Hell. We see a group in torment and the other in the bosom of Abraham. This is shown to us with the account of the rich man and Lazarus. I would encourage you to read Luke 16. See the conversation taking place between the one in Hell and Abraham.

The place where the wealthy man resides will not be his ultimate destination.

We are shown in the great white throne judgment that Hell is delivered and cast into the Lake of Fire.

Revelation 20:13: “Hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire."

Being cast into the Lake of Fire is described as the second death. This is where the condemned are eternally separated from God.
