Judas accepted the 30 pieces of silver. Then, in remorse, he attempted to return it. When they refused, he threw it into the temple. The Jewish leaders used the money that they had picked up off the floor to buy the field where Judas hanged himself. Judas' body hung there until it swelled up in death and then burst onto the field. www.booksie.com/Don_Watson

In his excellent Bible-based book The Day Christ Died, author Jim Bishop reconciled these two accounts by portraying Judas as using his belt to hang himself from a limb that protruded from the side of the cliff overlooking the Valley of Hinnom. After Judas had climbed out on the limb, he tied one end of the belt to the limb and the other end around his neck, he then dropped off the limb, intending to strangle himself. The weight of his body then at some point caused the limb to snap, and Judas fell and landed on the valley floor below, causing him (as noted in Acts 1:18) to burst open (which would, of course, have killed him, if he had not already died of strangulation prior to the fall).
