The number 7 is of Jewish origin. The words for Sabbath and “seven” (shevah) are related. For to swear an oath is to make a covenant and, in Hebrew, to swear an oath is to “seven yourself”. The word sacrament is of Roman origin. The sacramentum was an oath or vow that was pledged as a sacred bond, and consequently forfeit if the oath were violated.
