The number 7 is of Jewish origin. The words for Sabbath and “seven” (shevah) are related. For to swear an oath is to make a covenant and, in Hebrew, to swear an oath is to “seven yourself”.

The word sacrament is of Roman origin. The sacramentum was an oath or vow that was pledged as a sacred bond, and consequently forfeit if the oath were violated.

As for the seven sacraments, the origin is Christ himself.

1. Baptism - John 3:5
2. Penance - John 20:23
3. Eucharist - Luke 22:19
4. Confirmation - Acts 10:38
5. Anointing of the sick - James 5:14
6) Holy Orders - John 13:8
7) Matrimony - Matthew 19:6
