What can we learn from the story of Aaron's staff blossoming and bearing almonds?

Numbers 17:1 - 13

ESV - 1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying. 2 Speak to the people of Israel, and get from them staffs, one for each fathers' house, from all their chiefs according to their fathers' houses, twelve staffs. Write each man's name on his staff.

I think what people should have learned is the plan that God had for his chosen priests and ministers. This rod was supposed to sprout; then it went well beyond the expectations bearing ripe almonds. His priests and ministers should have done the same with others, they should have caused the Word of God to bear blossoms and ripe fruits in the hearts. Failing in this when Jesus came He said that He was THE true vine and that apart from Him we were not able to do anything ,such as bearing fruit, of our own. This also makes me wonder about Malachi chapter 3. Maybe when God asked the priests and the people to put food in His storehouses He meant causing His Name to be acknowledged to the ends of the earth; not the edible wheat for our stomach.
