As described in Job 1-2, the "testing" that came upon Job was not a punishment for something that Job had done wrong, but was the result of God permitting Satan to afflict Job in order to demonstrate to Satan that Job did not (as Satan had claimed) obey and serve God only because God had materially prospered Job, but that Job would continue to worship God (even if he lost all his possessions, as well as his own physical well-being) because Job was (as God Himself said in Job 1:8) a "blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil".
Why did testing come to Job? (Job 23:10) ERV "But God knows me. He is TESTING [caps, mine] me and will see that I am as pure as gold" (Job 23:10). God let Job be put into the furnace (Job 23:10)! But God ordained this not due to Job’s sin, and God then used this “thorn in his side” –this furnace heat to purify him and make him better. “Gold” is a symbol of the purifying of life (Job 23:10; Prov. 17:3; Mal. 3:3; 1 Peter 1:7). In fact, this image is used of you and I here in 1 Peter 1:6-7 and 1 Peter 4:12, i.e. of believers enduring persecution. When God put Job into the furnace, He kept his eye on the clock and His hand on the thermostat. He knew how long and how much. If you forget everything that I have said so far, remember this: Gold does not fear the fire. The furnace only makes the gold purer and brighter.
