What is the meaning of the clothing imagery (i.e., the “have put off” and “have been clothed”)?

Colossians 3:9-10

Relate it to the "old man" and the "new man."

3:9 "Do not lie to one another since you have put off the old man with its practices 3:10 and have been clothed with the new man that is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of the one who created it."

(Paul talks about the old and new self the way you would talk about clothes, putting one off and putting the other on. Why do you think he chose that picture?)

Colossians 3:1 - 25

ESV - 1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
