There is a great parallel in the church today. We take the traditions of the church and make them higher than Gods laws. Where the bible is silent we make our own laws and make them binding on everyone. What at one time are good scrupples, later become law. Smoking becomes worse than commiting adultry. Wearing the wrong kinds of clothes is greater than stealing. Going to movies is worse than not providing for your family.

Obedience to laws and rules outside of what the bible clearly says leads to pride and selfrighteousness. Legalists are blind and cannot see that they are sinners in need of a savior. They believe that through their own righteousness they can go to heaven by strict obedience to laws and rules.

They boast in themselves that they are righteous, and every one else is a sinner.
They strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. They love to place burdens on the backs of people that God never intended.

How many of the burdens we put on other christians are clearly taught in scripture. How many are just the traditions of the church with no basis in scripture.

Jesus said in Matthew 15: 7-9 Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth near unto me with their mouth, and honoreth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Many well meaning christians are taught these doctrines of men down through generations untill they become law, traditions of men.
