If all people in the world would follow all the commandments, the world would be such a more wonderful place to live in. That is what God intended from the beginning. It hurts the heart of God when we take stuff that is not ours. Just like it hurts us when someone takes something away from our children. The first 2000 years there were no Ten Commandments but God saw that we humans needed to know what he would like us to be like. But the main reason for the law is that we may realize how much we need a Saviour!
