What does Paul mean by "being judged faithful" in this passage?

What is being judged faithful so that one is appointed into God's service?
"I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent?"

1 Timothy 1:12 - 13

ESV - 12 I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service. 13 Though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief.

Basically what Paul was saying was God chose him and elected him for His glory and ministry regardless of his past. He was a rotten, blasphemous Pharisee who persecuted the church more than anyone, and yet, God, in His mercy chose him to be His most powerful witness to the Gentiles.

This is why I say, "God chose me not because of myself, but in spite of myself."

Just like Paul, we believers contribute nothing to our salvation except our sin.
