Where did Adam get names for the animals?

Genesis 2:19

ESV - 19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.

Adam made them up. It's as simple as that.

But of course what it signifies is not that Adam was good with names, but that it was his prerogative to name all the creatures. God gave him that right. And of course what that means is that he is in charge of them and responsible for them, for no one names anything which is not his own. Parents have the right to name their own children, because they are responsible for them. In the same way man is the head of creation and responsible for creation and the careful stewardship of all living creatures.

It's a big responsibility, this naming of things and we need to be sure we are up to it.
Regards
Philip

We don't really know HOW he did it, only THAT he did it. But, since God is our provider in everything, we can safely assume that God made sure Adam was well prepared and had all that he needed to complete this task. Since there was not yet sin, we can be assured it was a pleasant task and Adam was happy to do it. And, finally, because Adam and God had a close relationship and actually conversed with one another, we can surmise that Adam could ask God for help if he got stuck! "Father, what do you think we should call this black and white striped horse?" "You're right, we haven't used the letter Z very much yet." "Yep, Zebra is perfect."
