In Genesis 3:22 God sends man out "lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever".

I believe the implication of this statement is God had to keep man in 'mortal' form to enable us have the second chance we have today, so that the fall of man remains within the mortal/body realm; otherwise our eternal self would have also been corrupted, which would have left us no different from the fallen angels.

I believe the driving away of man from the Garden of Eden was a display of God's love and mercy towards man that enabled Him to later evoke His perfect redemption plan through Jesus Christ and now regardless of how short or long we live in the physical/mortal state, we have a real opportunity to live forever in God's terms and presence, which is far much better than the initial garden.
