According to Strong's Concordance (viewable at https://biblehub.com/hebrew/strongs_3162.htm), the Hebrew word (anglicized as "yachad") that is translated as "unity" in the cited verse appears 141 times in the Bible, and is variously rendered in other verses by terms such as as "harmony", and "dwelling together". So I would say that the word is not meant to convey total lockstep sameness (implying a suppression of dissent), but, similar to the case of instrumental or vocal music, a situation where individuals with their varying characteristics and gifts all contribute to an endstate that minimizes strife, maximizes group productivity, and produces a whole that is greater than could be attained through the efforts of individuals acting alone.
