What is faithfulness (fruit of the Holy Spirit)?

Faithfulness (Greek: pistis) is a fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) representing steadfast loyalty, reliability, and trustworthiness, largely defined as unwavering commitment to God and truth. It is the Holy Spirit producing inner stability, helping believers remain dedicated, honest, and steadfast.

Some Aspects of Faithfulness:

Trustworthiness: Acting with integrity, being reliable, and keeping commitments.

Steadfastness: Continuing to trust and obey God regardless of circumstances or trials.

Loyalty: Maintaining allegiance to God and His Word.

Rooted in God's Character: It is a reflection of God's own faithfulness.

How does God view the dependability of his worshippers? In the same way as did David, who said of them: Psalm 101:6 ESV "Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: He that walketh perfectly, he shall minister unto me."

The apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 4:2 ESV, "Here, moreover, it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful."

If we are faithful, we will be rewarded; that is certain. If we are not faithful, we will suffer loss. We see this principle in Jesus' illustration of the talents. The enslaved people who faithfully "did business" with the master's money received commendation and were richly blessed. The enslaved person who acted irresponsibly with what the master had entrusted to him was judged "wicked," "sluggish," and "good-for-nothing." The talent he had been given was taken away, and he was thrown out.—Read Matthew 25:14-18, 23, 26, 28-30.

What It Means to Be Faithful

As worshippers of God, we show faithfulness by obediently serving him. This certainly includes our remaining loyal to Jehovah while facing difficult tests or severe trials. However, success in handling big tests is not the sole factor in determining our faithfulness. "The person faithful in what is least is faithful also in much," stated Jesus, "and the person unrighteous in what is least is unrighteous also in much." (Luke 16:10) We must remain faithful even in seemingly small matters.

Christians are spoken of as "fine stewards of God's undeserved kindness expressed in various ways." As such, they are "dependent on the strength that God supplies." (1 Peter 4:10, 11)

The psalmist sang: "Oh love Jehovah, all ye his saints: Jehovah preserveth the faithful, And plentifully rewardeth him that dealeth proudly." (Psalm 31:23) ESV.

Let us be determined to prove ourselves faithful, fully confident that Jehovah is "a Saviour of all sorts of men, especially of faithful ones."—1 Timothy 4:10.

Conclusion

What is the lesson for us? Faithfulness leads to joy. (1 John 5:3) For example, we have the joy of knowing that we make Jehovah happy. He rejoices to see us reject the temptations of the world and accept the truth. (Prov. 23:15) Others in heaven also rejoice. (Luke 15:10)

Read Hebrews Chapter 11 about those faithful ones:

Paul backs up his definition of faith by showing faith at work. He captures the highlights in the lives of some "men of old times," as well as women like Sarah and Rahab.

How encouraging it is to find that "God is not ashamed of them, to be called upon as their God"! (Hebrews 11:16)

Can God say the same of us because of our faith? May we give him no cause to be ashamed of us as each day ends.
